Instants Tissés, my sister’s business, has now launched!

Several months in the making to sort out all the details and go around the inevitable changes of mind that my sister always goes through, her business online store, Instants Tissés, is now open!

Instants Tissés

Instants Tissés

“Instants Tissés” is French for “Woven instants”, and her business is all about special occasion cards and paper supports with a twist: fabric! Marrying high quality printed paper and light fabrics should bring an extra personal touch to your special occasions. At the moment she has an extensive collection of wedding invitations, menus, dinner table plans and cards, but a birth section is coming as well.

And if you don’t find anything that really tickles your fancy in the large existing collection, there is also a “custom” service that should let you get a quote on your ideal, personalised support for your special occasions.

Do pay her store a visit, use google translate if you don’t understand French, and do buy some of her stuff! She’s getting started and needs all the support she can get!

For the techies of you who read this, her site has been done using the excellent Shopify with a completely custom theme.

Moving on…

Last Friday was my last day at Betfair! After almost 2 years, I’ve decided a change was needed. I learnt a lot while being at Betfair, both technically and in team working skills. Some might argue that I’m opinionated and grumpy, but I’m just passionate about my job and I certainly grew a lot as an independent developer with my own ideas.

I’m starting straight away after this bank holiday week-end! No time to cool off or become a couch potato, I’m really excited to go to Lovefilm/Amazon next week, and it should be a great place to be!

I’ll have to update my commuting plans, the distance now being roughly 14 miles by bike, but I should be able to do that a couple of times a week without impacting too much my energy levels to be able to still have good week-end focused sessions. The train will have to become my friend a few times a week too, but I also have in mind to restore my mum’s 1974 motorised bike in the future. That should make for a nice little mechanics project, and a new way to get around!

How do you attribute credit if you don’t know where content comes from?

I’ve added a nice image to my little HTTP status codes application for the famous “teapot” 418 code (http://kodes.ekynoxe.com/k/418), but I couldn’t find any credit for that image anywhere.

Is this image your work? Let me know so I can credit you!!!

Given the emphasis given these days to credit attribution and piracy, I’m wondering how you can trace an image source… Anyone knows?

I’m a front-end dev!!

This post could also be entitled/summarised with “rant, rant, rant”, but for my own sake, I’ll make the effort of explaining what’s behind it.

My full time job title is “Front-end developer”. To anyone outside the web industry, it either means “err…. no idea”, or “a dude that makes websites”. To the initiated and (most) of my coworkers and industry pals, it means a whole lot more: I’m an expert in HTML, CSS, javascript (front-end technologies)… (more…)

A while back I posted about frustration I had about a project not being released. I posted it with a blurred screenshot of a site that will not get released. I’ve re-read the terms of my contract with Orange and it’s clearly accepted in it that I have the right to produce static assets for portfolio matters. Here they are!

In between bad news from client #1 and client #2, There is a bit of bright news. Not all is bad for ekynoxe!

Through international DJ Shur-I-Kan, whith whom I work at Orange, I came to meet Steve Maud of Cloud Nine Media, who was at the time looking to create a new website to showcase his videos, while providing him with the ability to do it all himself from a CMS.

When I initially registered ekynoxe as my freelance practice, I already had a potential client, there was going to be quite some work to do, short term future was looking exciting, albeit a little bit unknown.

Frustration

There are many things that a designer/developer has to go through, with varying degrees of complexity and annoyance. We’ve all been there, all endured the pain of a browser not liking your latest CSS wizardry, servers crashing and a few late payments. It’s annoying, but except sometimes for this last one, we live!

However, for me, there is one thing that tops it all. (more…)

The art of keeping calm

I delivered last week the website for a big client, and after a few months of very tight schedules, technical explications on the solutions chosen and the limitations of web browsers, debates and frank disagreements, I can’t say it’s been a smooth ride.

However, most of the problems that come up along the way can boil down to some important points that I may not have highlighted enough as being critical for the delivery, and the client’s inability to have things done and agreed in a timely manner: (more…)
