The web has evolved… Get used to it

A year back, I created a nice and simple website for my triathlon club: http://d3triathlon.com. I’m used to WordPress, and I know it has an easy interface to create content. So it’s what I chose to create the site: simple stuff, simple theme with a couple of simple pages.

At the time, I requested feedback and inputs from club members about features they wanted to see. I implemented most of them (safely ignoring the “I want to see a little guy, swim bike and run across the screen” request…) to produce what I feel is a decent job for what it’s supposed to do. A year later, after only one member dared trying to create a new article (successfully though!), I got an email asking me what I thought about using another platform, on which editing “looks just like word”… Here’s some thoughts.

Can’t find WPML 2.0.4.1 anywhere? Here it is…

I was struggling to find the latest free version of WPML, 2.0.4.1 as it has been (cleverly) removed from the WordPress plugins website, so here it is!

WordPress wp_enque_scripts in functions.php

August 18, 11 //

The functions.php file should be known to every wordpress theme developer, as it’s where all your custom theme code is expected to go, including the loading of special files, scripts and overriding the default, out-of-the-box wordpress functions and javascript files.

However, there are a few things one need to remember when writing code in that file, and it’s not always easy to understand. Specifically, registering and enqueueing scripts can be a bit tricky if you don’t understand how the functions.php file is loaded.

One of the biggest problem is understanding the scope and load/execution time of what is in that file. I’ve scratched my head a few times on it, and hopefully, I now understand it better and will manage to write it down correctly! (more…)

In between bad news from client #1 and client #2, There is a bit of bright news. Not all is bad for ekynoxe!

Through international DJ Shur-I-Kan, whith whom I work at Orange, I came to meet Steve Maud of Cloud Nine Media, who was at the time looking to create a new website to showcase his videos, while providing him with the ability to do it all himself from a CMS.

When I initially registered ekynoxe as my freelance practice, I already had a potential client, there was going to be quite some work to do, short term future was looking exciting, albeit a little bit unknown.

Frustration

March 21, 11 //

There are many things that a designer/developer has to go through, with varying degrees of complexity and annoyance. We’ve all been there, all endured the pain of a browser not liking your latest CSS wizardry, servers crashing and a few late payments. It’s annoying, but except sometimes for this last one, we live!

However, for me, there is one thing that tops it all. (more…)

Extending contact form 7

September 6, 10 //

My latest client requested a “careers” section on his website, with the possibility to apply to a particular job offer directly from the description page. A form should be displayed on this page, that simply sends an email to the company’s careers department.

As I developed the website using WordPress and a custom theme, I dug in the excellent contact form 7 plugin and created easily my custom forms. (more…)
